She looks like Cheryl Hines

Interesting that from this run in 1991 until the currently-running Sunset Blvd. in Australia, 2024, she did no musical theatre. Most of her Blvd. reviews say that at best her acting is ethereal, lousy and uninvolved at worst. Her singing is wobbly and all head voice. Here, she uses quite a lot of chest voice (though smartly, not as much as her studio recording), and great mixing of chest & head. Her vibrato is quick & healthy. I think her acting here is subtle and very effective. Obviously, time takes its toll and all voices age, regardless of bad or technique. But I often wish she would've stuck with this lightly belting early style she did in her early years, vs the hooty, over-covered, popera sound she adopted in the late '90s / early 2000s.

It seems wrong somehow for this number--a showstopper if there ever was one--to be performed to silence; we need to hear a live audience going nuts (which you have to know it did; how could it not?) to make it as thrilling as it should be. Also, Tommy, you're adorable--at least you were then--but get a haircut!

Frances is my absolute favorite Eponine. She is the most like book Eponine to me and even though everyone favors Lea Salonga because her voice is so clear and perfect (not sarcasm) it’s just a little too perfect for Eponine imo.

This is truly phenomenal. I have seen many Norma's and the "Salome" section is my least favorite in the show. But when done well, it's a show in itself. It was captivating.

I played thr Acid Queen in a local production many years ago. It's an amazing show and I was lucky to go backstage on Broadway! I knew Bill Buell and got to meet Anthony Barille, Paul and Michael Cerveris. Such memories!

I had the pleasure of seeing this very production of Guys and Dolls. It was an amazing cast! I just LOVED Faith Prince as Adelaide! She stole every scene she was in! Her squeeky delivery on "A Bushel and a Peck" and "Adelaide's Lament" were spot on!

It’s a shame she never became a big star on her own. She works a lot but she’s usually a supporting role or in touring shows. She’s got a good voice and oozes charisma.

I don't remember this part about Sutherland in Masterclass. Ironically, during the real Callas masterclasses in the early 1970s...Dame Joan was in her prime and probably the highest paid singer in the world...and would continue for nearly another twenty years before she retired in 1990. Here they speak of her in the past tense.

Ruthie is indeed the best Ellen. New generation of Ellen are good too it’s just there’s this effect with Ruthie’s voice and emotion.. I’ve watched the 2024 miss saigon I wish they didn’t change Ellen’s solo to Maybe but it was actually not that bad. More theaters play like this to come

Awesome quality! This video circulated as the Opening Night for so long, finally great to know when it was actually recorded and the fact that all this time, it was the first preview video! It’s a shame that the opening night one doesn’t exist unless it is the one from the NY Public Library won’t be available but, it’s great that this video does exist and you are very lucky to own an early generation copy of this video, the ones that circulate are the copies that haven’t aged well unfortunately especially with this scene in particular.
